The Laguna Phuket Triathlon promises to attract a strong field of international pro athletes. The 1999 elite pro line included Peter Reid (CAN), Lori Bowden (CAN), Chris Legh (AUS), Jackie Gallagher (AUS), Marc Lees (AUS), Wendy Ingraham (USA), and Heather Fuhr (CAN).
- 1.8k Swim
The swim course comprises two bodies of water. Starting on the beach at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket hotel, competitors swim 1430 metres in the sea before sprinting 100 metres across the beach to swim the last 370 metres in a lagoon finishing at the Laguna Beach Resort. Wetsuits are not allowed.
- 55k Bike
The bike course takes competitors out of Laguna Phuket onto narrow, winding roads. The actual route will be similar to the 1999 course with some steep hilly sections on the road to Naithon Beach north of Laguna Phuket. Drafting is illegal. Suggested equipment includes a minimum of two water bottle cages. Athletes should consider 24-28 tooth rear sprockets to ease the difficulty of hill climbs. Some of the road surfaces may be rough and athletes should use durable tyres.
- 12k Run
The flat run course meanders through Laguna Phuket and the surrounding area over sealed and unsealed road surfaces and dirt trails to finish at the Banyan Tree Phuket hotel.
BIKE SHOP /MECHANIC
There are no quality bike shops or bike mechanics on Phuket soathletes should bring spare parts with them. It’s not possible to rent racing bikes in Phuket, but mountain bikes of average quality can be rented. A bike mechanic from Bangkok should be stationed at Laguna Phuket for two days prior to the race.
For information on air travel and accommodation contact Royal Orchid Holidays, Thai Airways International. Alternatively, book accommodation directly with one of the five official Laguna Phuket Triathlon hotels.
Phuket is a very popular tourist destination so we suggest that athletes book flights and accommodation as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Thai Airways International should offer free bicycle transportation for athletes attending the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. (Free bicycle transportation should be requested when making flight reservations.)
