Koh Samet

Ko Samet is the closest palm-fringed, white-sand island near Bangkok. You can catch the bus from Bangkok then hop on a short ferry to the island. Once there, you can look forward to salty swims in the ocean, hiking trails, and lots of good old beach bumming. In the evening, grab a table on Haad Sai Kaew for a seafood dinner and to watch the fire dancers. Koh Samet has several different beaches to choose from: Haad Sai Kaew is where most of the action happens, Ao Wong Duean is more family-friendly, and the stunning Ao Wai beach is best for peace and quiet.

Kanchanaburi

The cool, rushing rivers and lush forests of Kanchanaburi make it one of Thailand’s best destinations for a nature escape. Stay on a floating room on the river, and wake up each morning to birdcall and fall asleep each night to the sound of the water. During the day, check out Erawan Waterfalls, walk the rails at the war memorial museum, or try your hand at elephant care at a local sanctuary. In town, the night markets are brimming with tempting Thai dishes and you can even learn to cook at the schools along the river.

“Beaches, mountains or lush forests, an escape from Bangkok’s urban jungle is never far away.”

Pranburi

Sheer limestone cliffs, mangrove forests and unspoiled beaches await on the other side of the 3 hour ride to Pranburi. Khao Sam Roi Yod National Park, where you’ll find the fairytale-like Phraya Nakhon cave, is just outside the town. Nature lovers may enjoy a stroll through the Mangrove Forest Nature Trail. Cap off you day by going to Sing’s Beach Bar and Restaurant for sundowners and to watch the sun set behind the limestone cliffs. The opportunity to explore the park plus the wondrous sights along the water make Pranburi a perfect weekend escape.

Khao Yai

Less than three hours’ drive from Bangkok, tranquil Khao Yai makes for an easy weekend getaway. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is open from 6 am to 9 pm daily. Waterfalls, biking trails and kayaking are all top ways to spend your time in Khao Yai. For a more relaxing visit, book a wine tasting tour at the local vineyard, or stroll around the Jim Thompson farm one afternoon. The cool weather makes Khao Yai especially romantic, so choose your resort wisely.

Hua Hin

Hua Hin has revamped itself from sleepy coastal town to a stylish beach getaway. The 2-hour ride from Bangkok is well worth the relaxation waiting for you. It’s easy to get swept up in Hua Hin’s charms. The old railway stations, historic hotels, temples and night markets are a good place to start if you’re looking for some culture. Feeling adventurous? Go for a bike tour along the coast, explore Hua Hin Hills Vineyards, or try a kitesurfing lesson on the sand.

Pro Tip: For a relaxing recharge, stay at the Paprai Villas just 25 km outside of Hua Hin. You’ll fall in love with the hotel’s lush gardens and huge pool.

Ayutthaya

The ancient city of Ayutthaya is well known for its impressive temples and ruins, but it’s also perfect for a relaxing getaway if you don’t have lots of time to plan. Start by cruising up the river from Bangkok, to slow down and enjoy the river scenery. In town, poke around the remains of the ancient temples and palaces, and get to know the city with a bicycle ride. Don’t miss Ayutthaya’s famously juicy river prawns — order them at one of the restaurants along the water.
